Dr. E. J. Johnson is a Managing Consultant in the Organizational Excellence Department at Christiana Care Health System (CCHS) based in Newark, Delaware. Dr. Johnson has over twenty five years of continuous improvement experience in healthcare, chemical and pharmaceutical industries. At CCHS she is responsible for driving process improvement initiatives across a complex $1.6 billion dollar healthcare delivery system with approximately 12,000 employees. She has successfully coached healthcare leaders on the adoption of lean and six sigma methodologies in the following business areas: Cancer, Surgical Services, Labor & Delivery, Neuroscience, Behavioral Health, Acute Medicine, Emergency Department, Pediatric Medicine, Pharmacy, Cardiovascular, ICU, and the Department of Medicine. Dr. Johnson successfully launched the Lean Six Sigma Certification program that yielding significant improvement and annual cost savings of $2.4 million, reduced length of stay by 20%, improved patient flow by 43%, improved surgical transition efficiency by 27%, and reduced fall rates by 40%.
Prior to joining CCHS in 2011, Dr. Johnson was the Director of Clinical Development Process Improvement at AstraZeneca Pharmaceuticals, where she managed a global team of Lean Six Sigma Blacks and Green Belts based in the US, UK and Sweden. Her team supported the launch of the Global Process Improvement initiative across the Global Clinical Research & Development Division. Her other roles at AstraZeneca included Medical Science Project Manager, and Operations Learning & Development Manager. She also worked in the chemical industry for over fifteen years as a Senior Research Engineer, Quality Improvement Manager, and an engineering consultant at various fortune 100 companies including Monsanto, Westinghouse, and Michelin Tire Corporation. Dr. Johnson, a certified Lean Six Sigma Master Black Belt, obtained her PhD, MS, and BS in Chemical Engineering from the University of Pittsburgh, and an MBA from Wilmington University.
